Postglacial rebound

Skills: Objects

The pair of objects from the Postglacial Rebound series addresses the temporality of landscape and our limited ability to perceive processes unfolding on the scale of deep time. The work explores how digital technologies can make geological transformations, otherwise imperceptible, present and how they reshape our perception of landscape beyond human temporal scales.
This takes shape in two fragments of the Finnish landscape that model opposing movements: the gradual uplifting of the landmass after the last Ice Age and the rising levels of seas and oceans. The result is a time-based object that brings the process of postglacial rebound into the present and juxtaposes two contrasting yet interlinked geological phenomena. The work is based on research conducted during an artist residency on the Kvarken Archipelago and was presented in the exhibition Horizon on the X-Axis.
